I attended theFUA program during the Spring of 2011. When I returned as a senior, I interned in a domestic violence shelter, where I was the Hotline Advocate. I answered the hotline on Fridays where women in crisis would call and look for aid from their abusive homes. I also helped admitting victims to the shelter and counseling them during their stay.
After that, I was recruited by the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence to take a Communications position. During my time there, I made media calls, wrote and sent press releases, edited video footage and wrote for their live blog.
I had planned on going into women's rights advocacy after I graduated with a dual degree in Sociology and Women's Studies, but jobs were rather scarce. I now work as an Admissions Counselor for the University of New Haven in West Haven, CT. I choose to work in higher ed because I can help students work towards their dreams and spread the work I did in my undergraduate time. I currently travel around New England, interviewing students and encouraging them to pursue a higher education. I love what I do but I still volunteer in domestic violence advocacy when I'm home.
